Résumé
The recent French surge of interest in ecocriticism has sparked interesting debates about whether there might be a French specificity in the field. Foregrounding the use of the term “ecopoétique,” some have argued that Francophone academics focus less on the thematic and ideological aspects of environmental literature than Anglophone scholars do, to better scrutinize the poetic fabric of the text. Relying on my own liminal experience as an academic with a bicultural background, trained in English studies mostly in France but with readings predominantly form the English-speaking world, I would like to propose a piece of semi-narrative writing, drawing connections between various cultural threads that I have learned to braid. I aim to tease out some of the influences that have come together to determine my cross-cultural practice of research in ecopoetics and ecofeminism–another ecocritical movement that was largely ignored in France until just recently and is now blooming. Furthermore, this essay delineates some of the leading initiatives and trends that have emerged in the past few years, bringing together various Francophone scholars and networks that have greatly contributed to the blossoming of ecocriticism in French academia. Finally, I cast light on some of the work carried out by the University of Perpignan Ecopoetics workshop. I draw out the guiding principles and perspectives that we believe can bring about innovative developments in the field.
L’émergence d’un vif intérêt en France pour l’écocritique prête à débat quant à de potentielles spécificités françaises dans ce champ d’études. Nombre d’universitaires francophones se sont emparés du terme « écopoétique ». Certain.es revendiquent une attention plus fine portée à la texture poétique de la littérature, contrairement aux anglophones qui resteraient selon eux plus focalisés sur des aspects idéologiques et thématiques de la littérature environnementale. En m’appuyant sur ma propre expérience liminaire en tant qu’universitaire bilingue et biculturelle, et ayant été formée aux études anglophones à l’Université française mais avec un socle de lectures émanant surtout sur la culture anglophone, je propose ici un essai sous forme de récit, où j’entretisse les divers fils culturels avec lesquels j’ai appris à composer. Je cherche ainsi à démêler les influences multiculturelles enchevêtrées dans mes travaux de recherche en écopoétique et écoféminisme, autre courant écocritique qui fut largement ignoré en France, soudain en vogue aujourd’hui. En outre, cet essai dessine certaines des tendances et initiatives récentes et pionnières en France qui rassemblent les universitaires et divers réseaux autour de l’écocritique francophone, actuellement en plein essor. Pour finir, j’éclaire certains des travaux entrepris au sein de l’atelier d’écopoétique, d’écocritique et d’écoanthropologie de l’Université de Perpignan Via Domitia, à présent baptisé OIKOS, et je synthétise les lignes directrices dont nous pensons qu’elles peuvent déboucher sur une recherche novatrice.
