The Vertigo of Reiteration through Adaptation: Nicompictopoop Representations in City of Glass and Smoke

Focusing on Wayne Wang and Paul Auster’s movie Smoke as well as on the graphic novel adapted by Paul Karasik and David Mazzucchelli, this paper examines the dazzling reiteration and mirror effects at play in the visual adaptations of Auster’s fiction, and which in the end only deepen the endless mise-en-abîme already present in “Auggie Wren’s Christmas Story” and in City of Glass. Disenchanted with a postmodern world of fragments and simulacrum, Auster’s patch-work nevertheless strives for a re-enchantment of the quotidian through story-telling and art-making, as means to create pure, inspiring images. Central to Auster’s fiction and their filmic or comics adaptations, many intertextual and metatextual devices bring to the foreground the question of art as language.
Cet article s’intéresse au film Smoke, réalisé par le cinéaste Wayne Wang et l’écrivain Paul Auster à partir d’une nouvelle de ce dernier, et à l’adaptation en roman graphique par Paul Karasik et David Mazzucchelli du roman City of Glass de Paul Auster. Ces adaptations visuelles de la prose d’Auster traduisent en images les troublants jeux de miroirs et effets de réitération, tant et si bien que les effets de mise en abîme déjà à l’œuvre dans « Auggie Wren’s Christmas Story » et dans City Of Glass en acquièrent une profondeur vertigineuse. Certes désenchanté par le simulacre et la condition fragmentée inhérents au monde postmoderne, l’œuvre en patchwork de Paul Auster se veut néanmoins collection de fragments capables de ré-enchanter le quotidien. L’art de conter et de créer un langage demeure orienté vers la genèse d’images pures et sources d’inspiration. Mise en œuvre par de nombreux réseaux de jeux intertextuels et métatextuels, la question centrale aux œuvres Austeriennes et à leurs adaptations, filmique et graphique, tourne autour de l’art en tant que langage.
