L'affaire de la septimanie, ou l'irréductible village nord-catalan

Abstract : In 2005, Georges Frêche, dynamic and controversial president of Languedoc- Roussillon, decided autocratically to rename the region as Septimanie. That was unthinkable for Roussillon Catalanist activists and many elected representatives, as it would make disappear any reference to their territory and, therefore, to their Catalan identity. Several demonstrations were organized in the form of carnival parades, using the « burro català » as emblem. Considering the success of these public manifestations, the regional president reversed his decision.
