« Comment ça se passe à la maison ? » Troubles du rôle professionnel dans l’entretien enseignant-parents

Abstract : Based on an ethnographic study of schools in priority educational areas, this article describes and analyses how teachers deal with parents in one-to-one interviews. When a pupil does not succeed in school, teachers often try to say that his or her difficulties arise from the family situation. This tends to cause tension with the parents and questions surround their professional role in that Geneva schools have long been defined in the French tradition as a public space away from the pupils′ social and family life. Recently however, teachers have increasingly been asked to work with social workers and psychologists to prevent educational and cognitive problems. Questioning parents about family life is considered a very difficult task because it can cause feelings of intrusion for both parties and threaten the building of trust in school-family relations.
